Gold Coast in Derby talks for Sterjovski

Gold Coast United supremo Clive Palmer plans to add Derby County attacker Mile Sterjovski to his squad for next season. With PSV Eindhoven midfielder Jason Culina already on his way, Palmer plans to strike terms with Derby over a long-term loan deal for Sterjovski, who has failed to make an impression with the Rams since arriving last season.

Sources in England have revealed United are negotiating a deal which would see them pay a $600,000 loan fee.

This equates to 60 per cent of Sterjovski's $1 million annual salary at Pride Park.

Palmer told the Gold Coast Bulletin: "Everybody had a bit of a laugh when we said we were going to win the competition. What we have done is seriously address that problem. And now we say: 'why can't we win?

"I can't see why not. We also say we're going after the Asian Championship and we have built a team that wouldn't be frightened to play anybody in the world.

"People want to join us because they see us as potentially the Manchester United of the A-League, the really elite team.

"Our plan is to excite the competition, that's why we have targeted people like Jason Culina."
