Goal-shy Tottenham striker Defoe looks to Rooney for inspiration

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is using England teammate Wayne Rooney as inspiration.

Defoe is determined to snap his goals drought - just as Rooney has with Manchester United.

Defoe told the Mirror: "Torres has had nine goals this season for Liverpool, but even by his standards it hasn't been one of his best.

"Now people are starting to question him - just like they did with Wayne - because he has yet to get off the mark at Chelsea.

"But Wayne is now starting to catch fire again and it's just a reminder of what can happen when you believe in yourself.

"Wayne scored 25 league goals last season and he was the double player of the year.

"When you do that one season, people expect you to do it again but that's not always the case.

"What Wayne has shown is it can just take one game. I certainly look at his last three league games and think: 'Wazza's back!'"
