Borussia Mönchengladbach will test Chelsea's resolve over Andres Christensen.
Armed with the €40 million raised from Granit Xhaka's sale to Arsenal, Gladbach will use the funds to bid for the Dane.
Christensen is entering the second season of a two-year loan with the Germans, but they now want to buy him outright.
"In the case of Christensen we are ready to make a record transfer. We know that a player with his qualities is not cheap," explained sporting director Max Eberl.
Chelsea have already rejected a verbal offer of €23 million for the defender.
But Gladbach won't give in and will return with an improved bid in the coming days.
