Shay Given admits Newcastle United can never expect to compete with the Premiership's elite until they start playing in the Champions League.
"The Champions League is a carrot as well - most players want to play there - which makes it even more difficult for us to attract people.
"But as far as I'm aware, the club are trying very hard behind the scenes to get the players in.
"Expectation levels are high - there are 52,000 every other week at the stadium. The fans want more from the team and we have to try to provide that."
