Shay Given can understand Manchester City fans being excited about the season ahead.
Irish goalkeeper Given believes the team aren't far short of snatching the title from Chelsea's grasp this year.
He told the Daily Mail: "It's an exciting time to be a City player and supporter. We've already made some additions to the squad what with the arrivals of David Silva and Jerome Boateng.
"Silva's coming from Champions League regulars Valencia and Boateng's looked great for Germany, but we need to step it up.
"The word is consistency. We proved against Chelsea and Arsenal that we're capable of competing at the top.
"And if we'd won just a few of the games we drew we would be talking about being in the Champions League, or even title winners now but that's not the case.
"We were beaten by Hull away and no disrespect to them but we need to be beating smaller teams like that."
