Shay Given is eager to see Newcastle United make signings next month.

"Ideally we would like to get a couple of players in January to freshen the squad up and strengthen the team," Given told Setanta Sports News.

"We are very close to the bottom and we need to get away from that.

"It is a long season and we hope to do that, but hopefully the owner and the chairman will get some players in January."
