Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie believes Stephane Henchoz never fulfilled his talent after leaving Anfield.
Henchoz retired from the game this week and Gillespie told BBC Radio Merseyside: "After he left Liverpool he never hit the heights that he did while he was at the club.
"From my own experience, I think once you leave a club like Liverpool, having played an integral part in their success, it is very difficult to find success elsewhere.
"It's a bit of a surprise that he has retired at only 34 years of age, as at just 34 you would feel he would still have something to give.
"He was the bedrock along with Sami Hyypia for the basis of Liverpool's success in the treble season of 2001."
