Sunderland winger Emanuel Giaccherini admits Paolo di Canio was key to moving to Wearside.
The lively winger revealed Di Canio was instrumental in his arrival.
Giaccherini said: "We spoke on the phone and he convinced me to try this experience - an experience that is important for a player.
"I get on fine with him. It is part of his character this type of behaviour.
"Now he is on the bench he tries to inspire us in some way. Sometimes he can be a bit exaggerated but it is part of him.
"I have put myself at the disposal of the coach for this project and I am happy."
