Gershon Koffie was given another opportunity in the centre of midfield for the Vancouver Whitecaps on the weekend.
The 21-year old Ghanaian made his 13th start of the season for the 'Caps, this time as a defensive midfielder, and impressed head coach Martin Rennie in the 2-0 home win over the San Jose Earthquakes in his role behind Nigel Reo-Coker and Daigo Kobayashi.
"I think that's the best balance we've had in midfield this season, and that's the first time we've played Daigo, Nigel and Koffie in that system," Rennie told The Province.
"(Koffie was) really, really good. A lot to build on. I think that's one of his best performances in a long time. He did so much of the things we've been asking him to do. I was really pleased."
Koffie admitted it was a role he loves due to the fact that he has experience playing both attacking and defensive in the middle of the pitch.
"To play in the midfield, you have to know both positions," said Koffie.
"It's a good position (for me). I just tried to kill the passing lanes and make it difficult for them to go through the middle."
