Ghana, Al-Ain star Gyan: I deserve African Player of the Year award

Asamoah Gyan believes he is the best candidate to win the 2014 African Player of the Year award.

The 29-year old Ghana international has been nominated as one of five players who are in the running to win the CAF award and he feels he has the statistics which will see him come out on top.

Gyan, who plays his club football in the UAE for Al-Ain, has competition from Manchester City and Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure, Borussia Dortmund's Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Lille and Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and Nigerian winger Ahmed Musa who plays in Russia with CSKA Moscow but is of the belief that he can be crowned the best player in Africa.

"Personally, I am really happy for the nomination and there are many footballers and I'm lucky," the former Udinese, Rennes, Sunderland forward told Joy FM.

"I will like to thank my players, the Black Stars and the club for getting me there and without them I wouldn't be where I am.

"I think my chances are bright and for these statistics I think I deserve it."

Gyan had a brilliant season at club level with Al-Ain which yielded 12 goals in the Asian Champions League - a competition high - while scoring on 29 occasions in the UAE Pro-League and becoming Africa's all-time leading scorer by netting twice at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
