Gekas urged to be patient at Portsmouth

Theofanis Gekas has been told to be patient as he chases a Portsmouth breakthrough.

"Theo hasn't had a chance yet, but I think it's mainly down to the system we're playing," Pompey coach Guy Whittingham told The News.

"He is very much a goalscorer, who looks to get beyond people. But the system we are playing with one man up front, we need someone up there who can bring other people into the game.

"He would need to play up front with Peter Crouch or Kanu. Him and David Nugent are the type of players who look to get in behind defences. Nuge will do a lot of running around the pitch, he will chase defenders and work so hard for the team.

"But Gekas will just look to goal-hang - for want of a better phrase. He will work hard for the side as well, but with a player like that, you want him to expend his energy in the right areas and do what he does best.

"But between now and the end of the season, I think all of the squad will be involved somewhere along the line."
