Southampton signing Martin Caceres has revealed that fellow Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez gave him positive intel about the club.

The former Juventus defender joined the Saints on a short-term deal for the remainder of the season on Thursday and says a chat with Middlesbrough's Ramirez, formerly of the Saints, helped him make the decision to move to St Mary's.

"I knew about it because I had a friend from the Uruguayan national team here in Gaston Ramirez," he told Southamptonfc.com.

"When the option came up for me to join Southampton I spoke with him, he spoke very highly of it and told me that it operates very well and has fantastic fans.

"That was without doubt one of the main reasons that drew me to a move here."
