Inter Milan boss Gian Piero Gasperini was upset with his players after their 4-3 defeat at Palermo.

It was the first time Inter had lost their opening game of the season in ten years.

“Many little things annoyed me, but above all we were in the lead and couldn’t keep hold of it twice. Then we had the game in hand and still went behind against the run of play. That is the biggest regret,” said Gasperini.

He started with the South American trident of Diego Milito, Mauro Zarate and Diego Forlan, but substituted the ex-Lazio striker after just 34 minutes.

“Zarate had always been very sparky this week, while tonight he was suffering when defending, so when Wesley Sneijder came on we adapted.

“Undoubtedly we need to reflect on these situations, as being on the end of so many counter-attacks from our own corners shows a lack of concentration. We certainly have to work on that.

“We must learn how to support the attack, which at the moment we are not doing very well. We conceded the first two goals with our defence in place, so these too are situations that are unacceptable and must be improved.

“Aside from the mistakes, our regrets are that we were doing well towards the end and looked like we would win, but then conceded twice in quick succession.

“I introduced Ricky Alvarez precisely because it was a favourable moment for us and we needed fresh legs in this heat, as it was a very warm night in Sicily.”
