Gascoigne used to fish in the Wembley baths to stay calm! – Southgate

Caretaker England manager Gareth Southgate reveals how former teammate Paul Gascoigne used to bizarrely calm himself down.

Gascoigne was arguably one of England's most inspirational players but the attacker was also known to be very erratic in his behaviour.

Now England boss Southgate has gone on to speak regarding one of Gascoigne's strange antics by stating that the former Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Rangers star used to pretend he was fishing in the Wembley bath in order to keep himself calm.

Ahead of England's clash with Scotland on Friday, Southgate told Sky Sports: "In my time in football, he would be unique anyway in terms of personality.

“Obviously he was playing at Rangers at the time, so he had an even bigger motivation [to do well against Scotland]. I mean I am not sure emotional control was his style.

"I think Bryan Robson made him a fishing rod and he was fishing in the old Wembley baths, or pretend fishing because that was the only time he ever relaxed so make of that what you will.

"God knows what he was actually fishing for. Whatever might have been floating in the bath, which is probably more pleasant before the game than it was after.

"Only he could remember the celebration he was going to do, having scored a goal like that. How does it even cross your mind - 'oh yes, got to do the dentist's chair thing'?"

Regarding the 'dentist's chair thing', Southgate was of course referring to Gascoigne's goal celebration after scoring a cracker against the Scots at Euro96 which came after an infamous boozy night out in Hong Kong ahead of the tournament when the players poured drinks in each others mouths after former manager Terry Venables let them have a night out.
