Furious Everton boss Martinez blasts back at Keane

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has slammed Aston Villa coach Roy Keane over comments about his Republic of Ireland players.

Ireland No2 Keane hit out at Everton after James McCarthy missed their Euro 2016 qualifying defeat by Scotland.

Martinez said: "To come out and make things public could make some of the Irish fans think that the players don't want to play or that Everton have stopped some players from playing.

"That's nonsense. That's ridiculous. You just have to look at Everton and how proud we are as a football club to see our players representing us for their countries.

"Those players are desperate to play for their country and it's wrong and unfair to put a doubt in the mind of the fans to think that the players could be having second thoughts about representing their country.

"That's maybe something that's happened in the past but I guarantee you that it's not the case in our dressing room."

McCarthy has missed the last three qualifiers for Ireland while Coleman sat out the 1-1 draw with Germany but the Everton boss insists he is in constant touch with Ireland manager Martin O'Neill.

And Martinez added: "I don't know the agenda that person has behind that.

"If the two managers talk it doesn't make much sense for him to do it."
