Funes Mori and Everton failed to cope with Merseyside derby emotions - Martinez

Everton boss Roberto Martinez criticised Ramiro Funes Mori for failing to keep his emotions in check in Wednesday night's Merseyside derby with Liverpool.

The Argentine defender was sent off in the 50th minute for an ill-disciplined challenge on Divock Origi, forcing the Belgian striker off the Anfield pitch on a stretcher.

The incident happened when the Toffees were two goals down and the extra man advantage invited Liverpool to score a further two goals to come away with a 4-0 victory, prompting strong words from Martinez.

"I just felt it was a challenge that he (Funes Mori) should have avoided. He got carried away with the emotion of the derby – maybe because it was his first one," said the Spaniard.

"I can understand the referee giving the red card but we didn't cope with the emotions of the occasion and we didn't control ourselves well enough."
