Daryl Janmaat insists he is prepared to take on the centre-back role for Newcastle United.
With Magpies skipper Fabricio Coloccini set to miss three matches due to suspension for a lunging tackle on Everton's Aaron Lennon on the weekend, Janmaat is being earmarked as his possible replacement.
The Dutch full-back he has never been deployed in a central role but will fill the void for his club if head coach John Carver opts to move him from the right side.
"If the team needs me there, I am confident I can do well there, even though I have not played as a central defender in the whole of my career," said the 25-year old.
"I will play in the middle of the defence if I am asked to do so, although it is not really my position.
"It is not really as though I have ambitions to stay there, but we all know what the situation is at the moment and if I have to play there, I will.
"The second half at Everton was the first time I have played there so it is not something I know all that well."
Newcastle, who sit 11th on the Premier League table, next meet third-placed Arsenal at St James' Park on Saturday.
