Fulham are making a final take-it-or-leave-it £4.5 million offer for Watford striker Marlon King.
The People says new Craven Cottage boss Roy Hodgson wanted to make King his first signing - and Fulham had a £3.5m bid turned down on Thursday.
Hornets manager Aidy Boothroyd claims it would take "silly money" to tempt his club to sell his 11-goal striker.
And while Birmingham and Reading have made inquiries about the much-travelled King, 27, neither club are willing to go higher than Fulham's bid.
