Fulham foiled by late Roma equaliser

Fulham were unlucky not to grab all three points against AS Roma in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Cottagers held onto a slender lead in the dying seconds at Craven Cottage before Roma's Mario Andreolli managed a last-gasp leveller to give the Italians a share of the points.

Fulham defender Brede Hangeland, who scored the home sides goal, said it was such a disappointing way to end a night that was full of drama, including a red card to Stephen Kelly and a saved penalty by Mark Schwarzer.

"I think during the second half they created a few chances and maybe deserved a goal," Hangeland told Five.

"But with 15 seconds left and the lead, you would hope you get three points - so we are really disappointed to concede a goal at the end."

With the red card incident, it was Hangeland who was initially sent off but the referee quickly realised his mistake and gave Stephen Kelly his marching orders for a challenge on Roma's John Arne Riise.

"He showed the red card to me - I was close to the situation but I didn't touch him," the Norwegian added.

"Stephen was close too - it was cruel to give a red card and a penalty.

"I just said 'it wasn't me'. The referee asked 'who was it?' - and no one volunteered ...

"I think we played well in the first half ... I think the boys did really well, and we came close to beating a top-class team."
