Fulham boss Jol surprised by Pardew's 8-year Newcastle deal

Fulham boss Martin Jol admits Alan Pardew's eight-year Newcastle United deal surprised him.

Pardew's reward for getting the best out of Toon was a new eight-year deal he signed in September.

But Jol, who has worked all over Europe and is in the process of negotiating a new contract of his own, does not think such long deals are 'realistic' in the modern cut-throat game. When asked if he was familiar with such long deals, Jol said: "No.

"Maybe if you are Arsene Wenger or Alex Ferguson but that is because they are there for a long time and their contracts are extended automatically.

"I said when it happened that I could sign here for 10 years and after two weeks the chairman could be unhappy with me.

"I don't think it would be realistic in the Premier League.

"The feeling is that clubs want consistency and that is why Newcastle probably did that.

"But if you start losing then you get pressure because that is the most important thing - results. It is the same all over the world."
