Fulham boss Martin Jol explained holding back Fernando Amorebieta for their draw with West Bromwich Albion.
With Aaron Hughes injured, Philippe Senderos pipped Amorebieta to partner skipper Brede Hangeland in the heart of defence.
Jol said: "I thought Senderos was good, he came in and did well.
"If I'd have played Fernando, Brede would have played for the first time on right side [of central defence] and I couldn't take that risk.
"I had to keep it as it was before with Philippe and Hangeland, but we have to start somewhere with Fernando because he is a very good player.
"Hopefully we will get the time and resources to try that and give him his chance."
