Northern Ireland have approached FIFA over Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson's decision to commit to the Republic of Ireland.

IFA chief executive Howard Wells told the Irish Star: "There is nothing personal in all this.

"It is about establishing a point of principle and preventing the Republic from selecting players from Northern Ireland who are not eligible for them.

"It is just unfortunate that Darron Gibson has become the focus."
