The Italian champion, who has started the restaurant at the Shed End of Chelsea’s ground with award-winning chef Marco Pierre White, admits he was mystified by English football when he first arrived here.

“In Italy they just played on a Sunday but when I came to England 23 years ago they were playing on a Wednesday, Monday, Thursday.

“You’d sometimes play the same team three times in a week, I couldn’t work out what they were playing for – it was such a headache!

“But when I went to a game I was hooked.”

Frankie told the November Chelsea Magazine he was a big fan of new West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola, adding: “He comes from Sardinia, which is where my parents come from.

“And we’re about the same size too, although he’s probably an inch bigger!”
