Francis says Man Utd ace Rooney must have big World Cup

Former England star Trevor Francis says Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney must prove himself at the World Cup this summer.

Rooney has found his form under Roy Hodgson, scoring 10 goals in his last 15 games for his country, and Francis, winner of 59 caps and a key member of England's 1982 World Cup campaign, now wants him to do it on the biggest stage of all.

"I am sure he would like to have a good World Cup and we would all, as a great footballing nation, like to see Wayne Rooney become one of the stars of this World Cup because if he does that would enhance our chances of progressing much further in the competition," he told Press Association Sport.

"He has been and will be a player of great importance to us and we are hoping that he will produce the form he is capable of and if he does that he will be big asset."
