France coach Domenech expects no Holland favours

France boss Raymond Domenech reckons Holland will lie down to Romania on Tuesday night to send his side and Italy crashing out of Euro 2008.

The Dutch have won Group C by beating both World Cup finalists and will field a weakened side against Victor Piturca's men in Berne.

If Romania win they will go through in second place and Domenech reckons a stitch-up is a certainty because the top two could meet again in the semi-finals.

He is adamant Dutch boss Marco van Basten would much rather face Romania than France or Italy at that stage.

Domenech said: "Our game against Italy will not be decisive. It's the other match that matters.

"My opinion is Holland will make wholesale changes for the game on Tuesday night and it is already written that Romania will qualify with them from the group."

When that allegation was put to Dutch boss van Basten he responded: "We're under no obligation to win the game but will take it seriously.

"We owe that much to ourselves and our fans."

UEFA officials insist Holland would be doing nothing wrong by fielding a significantly weaker team but Italian FA president Giancarlo Abete admitted he also fears a carve-up.

He said: "It's a natural and understandable worry.

"The credibility of the whole tournament and European football at large are at stake.

"If you look at the way Holland beat both Italy and France then the match with Romania should end similarly.

"But if not, we're going to have to take a deeper look at the format of the tournament."

UEFA director of communications William Gaillard admitted Holland are well within their rights to make wholesale changes which is commonplace when a last-eight spot is already secured.

Gaillard said: "That they could field subs or reserve players makes sense.

"I think most teams hope the third game is actually for nothing and therefore, because they have 23 players, it's a way to rotate the team.

"You don't risk yellow cards, you rest your best players, give a chance to others to prove themselves.

"It's not against the rules to do that. It's a fact of life."
