France captain Vieira left out of preliminary squad

France skipper Patrick Vieira has been left out of Raymond Domenech's preliminary squad for next month's World Cup.

The Manchester City midfielder was a key part of the 1998 World Cup-winning team but will not be around when Les Bleus compete in South Africa in 2010.

Along with Vieira as a surprise omission is Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema who was not included after an average season for his new club.

Domenech included five players who have never represented France at senior international level - goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso, defenders Marc Planus and Adil Rami, midfielder Yann M'Vila and winger Mathieu Valbuena.
