Fowler: Today's England squad would get up to a quarter of what Gascoigne did

Robbie Fowler has revealed that former England teammate Paul Gascoigne was up to all sorts of antics during his playing career.

Gascoigne is regarded as one of the greatest ever players England have produced and while his talent was undoubted, it was well known that the former Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Rangers star was also an eccentric character.

Former Three Lions teammate Fowler has now gone on to speak about Gascoigne's various antics during their time together with the national team and added that the current crop of England players would not even think about doing a quarter of the things the 49-year-old got up during his playing days.

The former Liverpool star said in a Q&A for the Mirror: “How long have you got?, because I played half my international career with Gazza. Most of it, in fact.

“He once drove a golf cart into a lake.

“He also used to love taking sleeping tablets and then trying to fight them! He'd go fishing, pop a couple of sleepers and try to stay awake. I don't know if he ever nodded off and fell in the water, but it's likely.

“If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it's long odds that the squad these days gets up to even a quarter of what Gazza did.

“Oh, and it wasn't me who broke his TV screen on that flight either, though I'm not saying anything about who did it. And neither is Alan Shearer."
