Four Chelsea starters (plus sub) help England U17 beat Mexico in World Cup

Four Chelsea players started for England U17 in their World Cup win over Mexico.

England beat Mexico 3-2 at the World Cup in India this afternoon to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Four Chelsea players – Marc Guehi, Jon Panzo, George McEachran and Callum Hudson-Odoi – started for England, with Conor Gallagher among the subs, as they made it two wins from their opening two games.

The first half was one of few clear-cut opportunities at either end, but it was England who stole the initiative six minutes before the break when Rhian Brewster curled a wonderful free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net.

Hudson-Odoi went off at half-time to be replaced by Angel Gomes, and just three minutes after the restart England extended their lead when the impressive Phil Foden displayed wonderful technique to score with a left-footed strike from just outside the box.

Jadon Sancho then made it 3-0, from the penalty spot, as England threatened to run away with the game, but two goals in the space of seven minutes, both scored by Diego Lainez, brought Mexico right back into the contest.
