Portland Timbers newest hero Kris Boyd admits the traditions of the MLS club will take some time getting used to.

The fans of the second-year outfit present their goalscorers with a slice of wood from a tree trunk after every match with Boyd wondering what he will do with his prizes after scoring in his past two matches, including the MLS season-opening 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union on Monday.

"The boys here - in the locker-room as they call it - say I'll need to think of something to do with the wood. It doesn't seem environmentally friendly, slicing a tree to bits whenever someone scores a goal, but long may it continue," he told SunSport.

"It was tremendous to get a goal on the first night of the season. Getting one in a pre-season friendly is one thing, but to hit the net when it matters is even better. It's a dream start for me."

And Boyd who is so used to playing for traditional football clubs like Rangers and Nottingham Forest, says even little things like the pre-match huddle and wearing green and white (the colors of Rangers' arch rivals Celtic) will be hard to get used to.

"That was a bit weird but it's the way it is. There I was wearing a green and white jersey doing a pre-match huddle," he added.

"I must admit, it was strange. As an ex-Rangers player and lifelong fan I didn't think I'd ever be doing that but it's part of the traditon here."
