Former Norwich, Stoke midfielder Russell lands at Tampa Bay Rowdies

North American Soccer League (NASL) side Tampa Bay Rowdies have confirmed the signing of English midfielder Darel Russell.

The 33-year old has joined the Rowdies on a two-year contract, with the option of a third, after spending the 2013 season with MLS club Toronto FC.

Russell comes to Florida having made more than 400 appearances for five different clubs in England and his experience will be telling for the Rowdies according to general manager Perry Van Der Beck.

"Darel brings a wealth of impressive experience," Van Der Beck said in an official statement.

"Throughout his career, he's developed a reputation for his hard work ethic and leadership.

"Darel is an exceptional box-to-box midfielder who has the ability to get forward and score goals. I look forward to seeing how he will complement our midfield."

Russell started his career with Norwich City in 1997 before moving to Stoke City in 2003. A four-year stint at the Britannia Stadium followed prior to his Carrow Road return in 2007 which lasted until 2010.

The east London-born Russell then found himself with Preston North End and has since had spells with Charlton Athletic, Portsmouth and Toronto.
