Mick Martin has urged Steve McClaren to make a number of new signings at Newcastle United.

The Magpies are preparing for life under the former England boss and although there has been some positivity about the appointment, former midfielder Martin says it needs to be complimented with quality summer inclusions.

He told the Chronicle: "They need new players.

"That's something we haven't seen for a while, but you can only do it if you have the players.

"I got good feedback from him and I'm quite happy with the appointment. "Attacking football has been missing for a while. But we need four or five players in and we need them to be good."

Newcastle continue to be linked with Schalke defender Joel Matip, QPR star Charlie Austin and Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost among others.
