The Scottish Premier League fixture fiasco has come to a head in recent weeks with Rangers rebuffed as they sought more help ahead of the Uefa Cup final.

Now, the former Liverpool star thinks the Old Firm's Premiership ambitions could be rekindled.

"If Ever Celtic or Rangers get the chance to join the Premier League, who on earth could blame them now?" he wrote in the Mirror.

"What a joke the SPL has failed to back Rangers and rearrange fixtures to help their UEFA Cup campaign like Zenit St Petersburg have had from their FA. But despite everything, I strongly fancy Rangers to win the UEFA Cup final.

"It will be a massive achievement for Walter Smith, but his side can do it.

"They have gelled together, used the difficulties to unify themselves and introduced a siege mentality."

Rangers head to the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday for the showpiece final.
