Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes a potential Harry Kane-Wayne Rooney forward partnership can work wonders for England.
In-form Tottenham striker Kane is set to start his first game for the national team, against Italy, on Tuesday. He scored within 79 seconds of his international debut against Lithuania on Friday night.
Thompson also said that based on his current form, Kane should have started against Lithuania but is now backing him to form a strong relationship with captain Rooney.
"I think there are other systems that can work and some might say Rooney's too similar but Rooney dovetailing off him would be ideal partnership," Thompson told Sportinglife.com.
"Some say he should have started and I'd agree with that given the way he's been playing for Tottenham.
"He deserved to start against Lithuania and you'd expect him to against Italy."
