Former Inter, Newcastle striker Martins improving every day for Seattle Sounders

Obafemi Martins is on the verge of returning to full fitness according to Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid.

The Nigerian striker has made just four MLS appearances since joining from Spanish club Levante in March and only two of those have come since he aggravated a knee problem on March 30.

However, Schmid suggests that Martins is close to contributing 90 minutes after coming off the bench to score in injury time if the Sounders' 4-0 triumph over San Jose Earthquakes on the weekend.

"He still needs some time playing, getting used to our guys and just playing and training on a regular basis again," Schmid told reporters.

"In terms of his injury, he feels much, much better each day. So that's a good thing.

"He's a player who can do wonderful things," Schmid added. "The goal was a good example, not that it was brilliantly played. It's just his reactions and his quickness.

"He was so quick after the ball bounced off the defender to get on it and he's got the composure, like in Colorado, to put that ball away.

"He has the ability to do the spectacular, but more than anything he has the ability to finish around goal and he can be very cold blooded when he's in those situations."
