Former German midfielder appointed Thailand coach

Thailand have appointed former Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer as their coach, reports the official AFC website. Thailand will face either Afghanistan or Palestine in the second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers on July 23 (home) and July 28 (away).

Football Association of Thailand (FAT) President Dato' Worawi Makudi said: "He has possibly the best qualifications of any foreigner we have ever hired to coach the team. We are hoping that he can bring success to our team."

Schaefer said: "I came here to start new development of Thai football by strengthening the overall structure. Producing young players is very necessary as I have done for several years in Germany."

The 61-year-old former German midfielder had coaching stints with Karlsruher SC, VfB Stuttgart, UAE's Al Ahli and Al Ain clubs.
