Former Derby player training with Birmingham

Birmingham City are casting an eye over former Derby County prodigy Giles Barnes, reports the Birmingham Mail. The 21-year-old is training with the club after being released by the Rams last week.

Barnes has struggled with injuries during the past two-and-a-half years and it was mutually agreed to tear up his deal at Pride Park.

It is perhaps no surprise that he has been given a potential lifeline by Blues.

Academy manager Terry Westley nurtured the Barking-born winger at Derby.

Westley's inspired decision to give Barnes an extended run in the side when he took over as caretaker boss from the axed Phil Brown helped them avoid Championship relegation in 2005-06.

And Barnes' brother, Marcus, is currently tied to Blues Academy.

Barnes joined Fulham on loan 13 months ago with a view to a £4 million transfer but he failed to make an appearance before returning to Derby.
