Ashley Cole admitted he was sorry for missing a penalty in LA Galaxy's ill-fated shootout in Major League Soccer's play-offs on Sunday.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back saw his spot-kick saved by Colorado Rapids goalkeeper and former Everton star Tim Howard in the Western Conference semi-final second leg as the Galaxy went down 3-1 on penalties after it finished 1-1 on aggregate.
Cole's miss, plus those of Giovani dos Santos and Jeff Larentowicz, means the five-time MLS Cup champions are now out of calculations for the 2016 MLS season while Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard's time with the club may now be over.
Cole wrote in a message posted on Twitter: “Back to LA, sad, disappointed, angry, penalty kicks are there for someone to be a hero today I was not, now is time to think, reflect and put behind a tough season, thank you to me team-mates staff and Everyone involved with LA Galaxy, and a special thanks and apology to the legend that is Steven Gerrard I don't know what's going to happen but it's been a pleasure to play alongside you for club and country a true gent now time for the family."
