Nottingham Forest failed in a loan bid for Aston Villa defender Freddy Bouma before yesterday's deadline fell.

The Mirror says Villa boss Martin O'Neill loaned his old club left-back Nicky Shorey last November before he moved to Fulham in January.

And Forest have since been interested in Villa's Dutch full-back Bouma, who is fit again after dislocating his ankle in July 2008.

Bouma,31, is desperate to prove his fitness as he has not played first team football since the injury.

But he has been told to remain at Villa rather than move to Forest for matches.
