Brad Davies reviews how English football reacted on Twitter as Manchester United went 12 points clear at the top of the table this weekend.

In a Premier League weekend that saw Manchester United surge 12 points clear in the title race, there is a growing sense of inevitability that the trophy is heading back to to Old Trafford and it's a feeling that certainly made it's way into the twittersphere.

Peter Schmeichel couldn't hide his delight at the freshly established double digit gap, simply tweeting "12 points:-)"

Future United signing, Bruno Gomes is only getting cheekier by the week and at this rate, by the time he lands in Manchester will be public enemy number one at the Etihad: "I say, 12 points about Manchester Fake ahahahahaah champione champione ole ole ole!!! Go go go Reds."

Having recently tweeted his disbelief at Rafael having been overlooked for last week's Brazil squad, Rio Ferdinand continued to sing the right back's praises and was also looking forward to a Champions League encounter with Real Madrid: "Nice 3 points that 2day. 2-0 at OT. Rafa man of the match for me. Couple of great challenges + an assist! Roll on weds vs Madrid..."

On the other side of Manchester, a couple of City's finest were doing their best to remain positive and reassure the fans that they'll continue the fight to defend their crown.

Sergio Aguero lamented a bad day at the office for the sky blues saying: "Some days, nothing works the way it should. This was one of those days. There's no excuse - we need to work hard to forge ahead."

Aguero followed that thought up with: "It all looks a bit grim right now, but I won't believe giving up is an option."

Vincent Kompany once again paid tribute to the supporters: "Our fans sang and stood behind us all game yesterday, despite losing.. Just reminds me that there will always be a lot to play for. #MCFC!!"

After a midweek goal for Wales and a virtuoso performance in netting a match winning double against Newcastle on Saturday, Gareth Bale's superstar status continues to soar. The winger turned forward is starting to remind a lot of people of another former Premier League legend who famously made that transition and who just happened to have a pretty decent game himself on the weekend. It wasn't missed by Bale either as he tweeted - "Viva Ronaldo with another hat-trick #watchoutunited"

With his blocked shot having fallen to team mate, Sunday Mba to score Nigeria's winning goal in the African Cup of Nations final, Chelsea boy Victor Moses tweeted his elation at realising a footballing dream - "One of the best days of my life this is a dream come true I'm so proud to be Nigerian. The win is for each and everyone of u back home." I'm sure that includes you, Peter Odewingie, if it makes you feel any better.

In other hard hitting Manchester United news, Wayne Rooney confirmed to a fan that not even he is above having to pay 6 pounds a month for the MUTV channel. New United recruit Wilfriend Zaha had a chuckle at this but was quickly warned by Rooney that he'd be paying his way too.

Wayne Rooney: "@wilfriedzaha u will have to aswell mate haha"

Wilfried Zaha: "@WayneRooney thought we'd get that free to be honest lol"

Last word for today goes to the ever entertaining Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who has been doing a little reminiscing: "Just seen the funniest home video of me when I was 8 dancing to Michael Jackson! Might have to put it on my website soon lol". A note for Arsenal fans: Chamberlain turned 8 in August 2001, the commencement of the season in which Thierry Henry lead the Gunners to their most recent league/FA Cup double.
