FOOTIE TWEETS: Chelsea celebrate fight-back; Man Utd signing Zaha apologises; Suarez all smiles after Liverpool win

Brad Davies reviews the weekend in England as seen on Twitter by the game's stars.

With both Manchester United and Chelsea having lowered their colours to European opposition in midweek, their FA Cup quarter final clash took on added importance in their trophy chasing exploits.

After storming out of the blocks to lead 2-0 after eleven minutes it looked as though United were cruising into a Wembley semi with their "Noisy Neighbours" but a couple of second half Benitez substitutes paid dividends, as the Blues hit back to level. Only a late David De Gea super save from Juan Mata kept United's Cup dream alive and going by their post match tweeting it was Chelsea's players who were clearly the happier with the result.

Victor Moses - "good performance and great character from the boys especially after going 2-0 down never say die attitude."

Eden Hazard - "Thank you all the fans for the support. You are fantastic. See you next game."

Demba Ba - "The team shows some great character today... CFC never die !!!!"

Meanwhile in league matters at Anfield, Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Liverpool in their come from behind win against a red hot Tottenham. The Uruguayan was shouting about the result on Twitter afterwards - "VERY GOOD WIN. Great effort by the whole team. We have to keep working hard!! YNWA!!!!"

Suarez's scintillating form has seen his name emerge as one of the favourites for player of the year honours and although Steven Gerrard doesn't have an official twitter account, Liverpool FC took to social media to share this quote from their skipper about his striker - "If Suarez doesn't win an award this season he'll be the best player ever not to win one."

Mother's Day in the UK meant many a footballer taking to Twitter to wish mum's well en masse.

Robert Snodgrass - "Happy house today since its Mother's Day I have asked the misses to watch supersunday with me #mothersdayspecial."

Anton Ferdinand - Happy Mother's Day 2 all the mums in England your song for today is Boyz ii men's mama have a listen if u don't know it!"

Shaun Wright Phillips - Happy Mother's Day 2 Mums everywhere!! Blessing u all."

Having signed with their bitter rivals Manchester United, Wilfried Zaha came in for special treatment the traveling Leeds support at Selhurst Park on the weekend. Zaha was feeling guilty about some fairly blunt hand signals offered to Leeds supporter who had taunted him all afternoon, tweeting - "On that note I also wanted to apologise for the gesture I did towards the Leeds fans in yesterday's game. Very unprofessional from me."

Joseph Barton, as he calls himself on Twitter, dropped a microblogging monologue with this series of tweets expressing his desire to be a man of the people - "Decided I am going to start following my followers. The ones that generally enlighten me in a positive way...

I'm not about to start following people who ask me, am I? Just tag me in some tweets to things your interested in and if I like what your...

on about or can feel your passion for the topic, I might ignite mine and together, we can maybe try to find likeminded people on social...

media to make a difference. That's what finding fulfilment is about after all, giving of yourself and your time to others."

After a disappointing trip to the Hawthorns for Swansea City, all Wayne Routledge wanted to do was vent to his followers, but he checked himself before he wrecked himself, or at least his wallet - "Can't even write what I wanna say on here or I'm defiantly getting fined. Unbelievable! #WatchTheReplays."

Finally, Stan Collymore certainly appreciates Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew's hirsute new look - "I love Alan Pardew's beard. Someone start a twitter account in honour of this facial hair tour de force. I want one."

Of course when it rains, it pours and not 10 minutes after Stan's request, Pardew's beard was racking up parody accounts left, right and centre. Said Stan about the response - "Only on twitter can there be an argument between 3 people claiming to be Pardew's beard. I love this."
