Darren Fletcher says it's no mystery why Wayne Rooney performs better for Manchester United than England.
Fletcher believes Rooney excels for United more so than for England because he and his team-mates have built up such an effective understanding over the six years he has been at Old Trafford.
"We train day-in day-out, we get to know each others' games, different styles of play and formations," said Fletcher. "Wayne knows our game inside out and we know his game because we've built up this relationship for a number of years.
"It becomes a natural thing for him to play for United. But he's got so much expectation on him every season. He's had it since he came to the club.
"People are going to look Wayne's form last season and expect the same, and I'm sure he'll expect the same himself.
"He demands such high standards and quality from himself, that he'll be expecting to go out there and do that. But it's also important that, if he doesn't, we've got other players who can step up.
"Wayne had a fantastic season but we all need to step up to the mark. A lot of the players have spoken about it, Ryan Giggs in particular. We'd love it to happen again, Wayne scoring so many goals, and he's definitely capable of it, but we can't just expect it."
