Fletcher desperate to repay faith shown by Wolves boss McCarthy

Wolves striker Steven Fletcher knows he must be careful as he turns out for Scotland against Sweden.

He won't escape the harsh words of Mick McCarthy if he returns to Molineux with another injury picked up on international duty.

Fletcher told the Scottish Sun: "My club boss isn't a fan of having internationals just a few days before the Premier League kicks off.

"You can understand it from his perspective because he doesn't want any of his players to get injured. The last thing he said to me before I left on Saturday was: 'Look after yourself and don't get injured'.

"He's done all his work in pre-season to get us fit and any injury would be a kick in the teeth for him. As players you want as much game time under your belt with the national team as you can get.

"It's great Mick McCarthy had the faith to spend £7m on signing me. Now I just have to show him he's made the right decision. People have commented on the price tag, but I just try to get on with it.

"It was the same last summer when Burnley bought me for quite a lot of money. I did quite well for them and I aim to do the same for Wolves this season.

"I scored on my home debut at the weekend against Athletic Bilbao and I want to get more goals. Wolves are a big club and they want to finish higher up the Premier League than they did last season.

"They were disappointed they didn't have a better finish last year."
