Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton says that he wants to emulate the most progressive managers of this era.
And he is modelling his new job on the likes of Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino. He had some interesting things to say about going from playing the game to managing.
"But you close one chapter and this is the start of a new chapter for Joey Barton the coach," he said to the Mirror.
"Usually slow plodding midfielders tend to be good managers, they really do.
"Guardiola, the best coach in the world, was a midfielder who had no pace , no skills.
"Look at Pochettino, similar profile, if you look at any great manager they tend to be of a certain type.
"I am taking great refuge in the fact midfielders tend to make great managers.
"If you think about it we are in the middle of the park , communicating at all times with the defence and are the hub of a team.
"That is why midfielders are able to transfer those skills from playing to coaching.
"To be a midfielder like me to survive as long as I did you have to be able to scheme and think about things differently, that will help me to be a manager."
