Experts say Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney should not be overly concerned after a third metatarsal injury in his young career.

Pure Sports Medicine performance director Steve Nance, Fulham's strength and conditioning coach, told the Mirror: "He's just been very unlucky. People have been breaking their metatarsals for years. I can't see any trend in it being more or less common.

"He heals very well - it was only 40 odd days last time - and at 21 he has got age on his side."

Meanwhile, Charlie Brooks, head of corporate communications for Nike UK, said: "Wayne is personally absolutely confident, as we are, that the boot had nothing to do with his injury."
