Les Rogers, who coached Barry at Brighton before he joined Aston Villa at 16, is convinced his protege can become an England regular.
Rogers said: "Even at a very young age he stood out because he had such a fantastic left foot.
"When he was a young lad at Brighton he played in every position possible, he was just a natural footballer. He phoned me before the Israel game and told me he thought he would get a chance.
"I'm so proud he has taken the opportunity with both hands."
