Alberto Gilardino insists Fiorentina are not in the Champions League just to make up the numbers this season.

He said: "We were satisfied with a first year attempt. Some say Lyon are weaker now that they have sold Juninho and [Karim] Benzema, but don't forget they brought in [Aly] Cissokho. My teammates and I believe the team is now even stronger.

"We will try to be constantly focused. Our squad has remained basically the same, with the same hunger to do well in Europe and Italy.

"We want to do better than last season. In Lyon and into the Champions League, we are aware of our potential and want to take control."
