Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli hailed Alberto Gilardino after their 3-0 thumping of Reggina.
"Alberto was an example to everyone today," smiled Prandelli. "We have to thank him. Players don't always have the right determination when coming on as a substitute. Today he showed exactly what someone has to do in that situation.
"Alberto had played every game up until now and could not play another 90 minutes. Giampaolo Pazzini worked well over the past two weeks and it was right to give him a chance."
Adrian Mutu was also out with a knee injury and tests will be needed to see if he can play against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
"We were worried about this game because it's tough to get right back on track after a break for international duty, especially when you have as many players jetting around the world as we have."
