FIFA president backs China World Cup

FIFA chief Sepp Blatter believes China has the ability to successfully hold a World Cup but stressed the decision about 2018 event is on hold.

Currently FIFA employ a rotation policy whereby continents take it in turns to host the World Cup meaning as it stands the North and Central American and Caribbean region is due to get the tournament in 2018.

South Africa will host the 2010 event while the FIFA executive committee will meet on October 30 and 31 to decide where the 2014 World Cup will be held, with Brazil set be confirmed as the hosts.

Afterwards they will make the decision whether to scrap the current selection system from 2018 onwards and throw the bidding open.

"The FIFA executive committee will meet on the 30th and 31st of October and decide whether the 2014 World Cup goes to Brazil or not," confirmed Blatter.

"Then we have to make the decision if the system of the rotation of the World Cup amongst the confederations will be maintained or if the executive committee decide to open the market for the 2018 World Cup.

"There is a lot of time in front of us and the exact decision and how it will work cannot be decided now because we do not know where we will go in 2014."

Blatter is currently in Shanghai ahead of Sunday's final of the women's World Cup and has declared China's hosting of the tournament a success.

With the country also keen to host the men's World Cup in the future Blatter confirmed he believes they have the capability to hold such an event.

"China has the technical abilities to organise a World Cup after what I have witnessed at the Women's World Cup and what I will see at the Olympic Games next year," he added.

"As a country they are able to organise something such as the Olympic Games with 28 different sports so they definitely have the ability."
