Manchester United could be handed a shock Champions League recall with FIFA threatening to throw the Swiss FA out of football. The Sunday Mirror says FIFA has set a deadline of January 13 for the Swiss FA to sanction its club Sion or face a ban from football.
If suspended, Switzerland would not be able to play any international matches and Basle, who qualified for the Champions League last 16 ahead of United, would be unable play their tie against Bayern Munich.
FIFA has demanded Sion be penalised with a 3-0 defeat for every match in which they fielded any of six players signed during the summer when the club was subject to a transfer ban.
Last night, Basle vice-president Bernhard Heusler said: "I am confident that we will play Bayern Munich, but I take the threat very seriously."
