FFA announce Fair Play Day

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announced its support for FIFA's 'Fair Play Day' at its Hyundai A-League matches on Saturday to be held on the Gold Coast and in Townsville.

"Fair play is essential to our sport and to everyone involved in it," said FFA CEO, Ben Buckley.

"We need to nurture the values of sporting spirit and the practice of 'fair play'.

"It should be something which comes very naturally to Australians because of our belief in a 'fair go'."

FIFA is holding its 13th annual FIFA Fair Play Day in matches held between 5-9 September.

FIFA Fair Play Day has the strong personal support of the FIFA President, Joseph Blatter, and is based on the premise of promoting the spirit of fair play amongst players, referees, fans and officials.

President Blatter recognises the fundamental role of fair play in sport and the need to apply it to all sporting activities, including children's activities.

"Children need strong values to grow up with, and football, being a team sport, makes them realise how essential discipline, respect, team spirit and fair play are for the game and for life, " he commented.

"FIFA's Fair Play campaign involves much more than simply promoting fair play on the pitch during a competition. FIFA is committed to encouraging fair play in society too, beginning with our future - with children," he said.

Buckley said this emphasis on children was important in an Australian context also.

"More children play football than any other sport. We not only want young players to enjoy the game and learn new skills, but also learn the value of team work, respect for opponents, team mates and referees."

FFA also supports vulnerable children through its charitable efforts for UNICEF Australia with this season's fundraising focussed on supporting UNICEF projects in Africa.

Details of the two Hyundai A-League FIFA Fair Play Day matches are:

- Gold Coast United v Sydney FC, Skilled Park, Robina (Kick-off 5:00pm AEST) - North Queensland Fury v Brisbane Roar, Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville (Kick-off 7:00pm AEST)
